Landscape lighting done right

Our outdoor lighting enhances everything around it, with soft washes of light!

As you can imagine, this is a common question. We work with discerning St Louis area homeowners who are smart to do their due diligence when selecting a contractor for a significant home improvement such as adding outdoor lighting. Landscape lighting not only beautifies your home, but it also makes for safer movement about your yard at night. Architectural facade lighting not only shows of your home during the evening, but it also adds some home security. Would be intruders are smart to stay away from well illuminated areas. So many of our St. Louis area customers also have backyard outdoor lighting on their pool, patio, or deck. They often tell us that previous to adding backyard lighting, nobody ever went out to those areas at night.

There are a lot of great reasons to work specifically with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives but here are our top 5.

  1. Fourteen years in St. Louis
  2. Trained lighting designers
  3. Best of the old and new technologies
  4. Quick installation
  5. We focus on outdoor lighting

Fourteen years in St. Louis

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis opened in 2000. For 14 years we have been serving local customers throughout the metro market in areas including St. Albans, Chesterfield, Wildwood, and throughout many more of St Louis’ top locales. We have thousands of happy customers and these are not only one-time customers. We also provide annual maintenance programs to ensure your lighting package continues to look as good as when it was first installed. How many local home improvement providers have been serving this market for almost 15 years?

Trained lighting designers

Our outdoor lighting designers are trained in designing and installing outdoor lighting. Like any home improvement, you look for a specialist because of the experience that specialist brings to the table. Having installed outdoor lighting at thousands of local homes, we we blend our expert training with our experience to bring the best outdoor lighting designs to your home.

Best of the old and new technologies

With any home improvement, not only are there lots of choices, but that list expands exponentially when adding all the new technologies. Take LED for example. We hear a lot about LED. It’s a great technology and the bulbs last 50,000 hours or more. Imagine not having to change a bulb for years! Compare that to even a simple lamp in your home. You probably keep a small stash of light bulbs just for the lamps and overhead lighting fixtures that seem to need new bulbs on a regular basis. But, when a bulb is good enough to last for years, it has a higher price. We kept a close watch on this new technology both from a capabilities and also a cost perspective. We feel the time is right for LED technologies. We are not only offering this as an option for new customers. Many of our existing customers are asking us to retro-fit their lighting to LED which we are able to do.

Quick installation

When you are ready to move forward with a home improvement, it’s probably something you have thought about for quite a while. You’ve no doubt done your research and you’re not only ready to say go on the expense, but you also want it installed as quickly as possible. We know this so we keep inventory on hand to complete installations often within a few days to a week after our customers contract with us for their lighting.

We focus on outdoor lighting, and that’s all!

We have had too many calls from St. Louis homeowners telling us that they contracted with their landscaper or irrigation company for their outdoor lighting, and the system is worthless. We’ve pulled countless numbers of those systems out and put in professional outdoor lighting. We don’t install sprinklers. We don’t offer any landscaping services. We focus on outdoor lighting and we do lighting right.

Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis we pride ourselves in thinking “outside the box” when it comes to new and unique outdoor lighting designs. Aside from the traditional outdoor lighting installations we are widely known for, we also have many clients that are looking for something a little more avant-garde to add to their home and landscape. Festival lighting, also known as fiesta lighting, is the answer.

Festival lighting is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after outdoor lighting genres in residential and commercial outdoor lighting. Festival lighting originated as a way to light outdoor areas in honor of outdoor celebrations such as street festivals and fairs. These venues were often draped in lights for an evening, or two, to celebrate a significant local event and then removed at festival’s end. Permanent festival lighting allows you to indulge in the same magic every night. We have  completed many permanent festival lighting installations in and around the St. Louis area for both residential and commercial settings for many happy customers. Business owners and homeowners alike are requesting this unique lighting for their backyards, outdoor living spaces and commercial storefronts.

As a general rule of thumb,  festival lighting falls into two categories, orb or pendant lighting and festoon (fiesta) lighting. Each genre of permanent festival lighting has its own distinct beauty and style.  We offer our customers the choice of either LED or incandescent permanent festival lighting, which is also available in white (clear), and multiple colors. The bulbs can easily be changed out to honor a special occasion or as a way to change the mood of the area you are illuminating.

    Festoon Lighting

The addition of festoon lighting can serve well in lighting an overlooked area in your landscape. It can also be used transform a dark courtyard or patio at your business into a most-requested location! This unique lighting technique works well in covered patios, porches, outdoor living structures or draped in a designated spot in your landscape.

Permanent festival lighting added to this majestic tree makes the perfect spot to mingle under in the evening.

Orb lighting added to this majestic tree makes the perfect spot to mingle under in the evening.

We use multiple strands of low-voltage LED or incandescent festoon lights and string them over the span of the area we are illuminating. We use cable to support the weight of the electrical wiring when we install permanent festival lighting over an area with a large span; this ensures the safety and the integrity of the system. We always use commercial-grade lighting products and professional installation.

  • Orb Lighting

Orb lighting, also known as pendant lighting, is based on the same principles as fiesta lighting, the only difference is the use of “orbs” give the appearance that the lighting is “free-floating”. Orb lighting  comes in 10″, 12″ and 16″ and are available in white, colored as well as clear acrylic. These lights are contemporary in design and work well in  both rural and urban themed settings.

Less is always more when it comes to mosquitoes!

Outdoor living is not only a trend – it’s a lifestyle. St. Louis homeowners are adding outdoor fireplaces, decks, and patios to their backyards to really enjoy spending time and quality living in their own backyard. With the investment in these spaces, and enjoying the spaces, residents want to enjoy their yard from the day long into the night. As dusk falls, the true romance of outdoor living and summer memories comes to life with well designed outdoor lighting. But, with dusk comes mosquitoes. With mosquitoes come the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses. At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis, we have a sister company – Mosquito Squad of West St. Louis County. With the combination of outdoor lighting and insect protection, we can ensure you can really enjoy your outdoor space at night.

How does such a tiny insect cause so much trouble? Simple; mosquitoes, though tiny, are capable of giving us not only itchy bites but also of transmitting illness and disease. Among the most recent mosquito-borne illnesses that is causing quite a stir is the painful Chikungunya Virus. Here in St. Louis, health officials recently confirmed the first case of this virus to show up locally in the St. Louis area. Luckily, the infected resident was not bitten by a mosquito in St. Louis, but rather by a mosquito from the Caribbean.

The CDC confirms  the virus is transmitted to people by mosquitoes.  Symptoms include headaches, fever, joint pain and swelling.  The virus made its first appearance in the Americas in the Caribbean in 2013.  So far, there is no vaccine to prevent the disease or medicine to treat the infection. Since the first local transmission of Chikungunya was reported in the Americas late last year, health officials have been bracing for the arrival of the debilitating, mosquito-borne virus in the United States. Just seven months after the first cases were found in the Caribbean, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention( CDC) reported the first locally acquired case of Chikungunya in Florida.

Retain the feel of an endless summer right in your own backyard through the addition of outdoor lighting.

Although it is only mid-August, I can already start to sense the last days of summer are close at hand. Our family’s interests are already turning from beach-filled vacations, to books, schedules and a return to reality. Summer will soon be only a memory where we return to enliven our daydreams on those crisp autumn days, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many ways to retain the feel of an endless summer right in your own backyard through the addition of outdoor lighting.

Backyard pergola lighting

Any backyard space can benefit from adding soft touches of outdoor lighting.

By adding light to your leisure time outdoor spaces you can increase the time you and your family enjoy using them. Of course, the most obvious benefit is that deck or patio lighting will allow you to extend the use of your outdoor living space beyond sunset. This is especially beneficial as we move into fall, the days become shorter, and evening arrives earlier. St Louis deck and patio lighting can also be used to enhance safety and security. This is especially important around stairs and other points of entry where accidents are more likely to occur because of low visibility. Lighting is also a great way to create ambiance, set the mood and  accent your landscaping or just show off your outdoor environment!

St. Louis deck and patio lighting

Outdoor lighting will enhance the enjoyment of your outdoor living spaces year-round.

It is important to choose the right light for the job when it comes to lighting an outdoor living space. We treat  your exterior spaces with the same attention to detail as an interior designer would when choosing the right lighting within your home. This includes applying common sense principles and utilizing a combination of lighting styles to accommodate different purposes. The types and number of lights you need for your deck or patio lighting will depend on the size of your space and how you plan to use it. Spots lights are beneficial when used in task areas, such as outdoor kitchens whereas low lighting creates a soft, inviting illumination in seating areas. We also often incorporate lighting into steps, or stair treads along with  low-voltage landscape lighting and/path lighting around walkways and entries to maximize safety.

In our experience as the St. Louis area’s outdoor lighting experts, low-voltage lighting such as LED  is best for lighting outdoor living spaces. It  provides quality illumination without being overpowering or making it difficult to enjoy the night sky. Low voltage also means your installation will be less obtrusive to neighbors than other types of outdoor lighting. Other added benefits of using LED is the energy efficiency, durability and longevity your system will have too!

Outdoor lighting with curb appeal

Outdoor lighting is one of the best ways to increase your home’s curb appeal.

Is there a house on your street that you love to drive or walk past in the evening? Do you make it a point to time nightfall with your evening dog walks just to gaze upon this home in the evening under the spell of professional outdoor lighting? If so, you are under the influence of what many refer to as “curb appeal” — and believe it or not, with a little help from Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis you can turn your house into that “ooh” house!

August marks the first National Curb Appeal Month, and that leaves homeowners here in St. Louis a short time to make a big impression! National Curb Appeal Month will make a  great time for homeowners  to focus on ways to add value and design appeal to their home’s exterior — and what better way to boost your home’s curb appeal than with the addition of outdoor lighting!

Curb Appeal…if someone asks you to describe it, what would you say? It can be hard to put into words, but when a home’s got it, it’s easy to spot.

Symmetry and framing the entryway in romantic washes of light will welcome guests instead of overpowering them with light.

Not only will boosting your homes curb appeal make it a more pleasant environment  for you and your family, it will also help boost your home’s value as well! The more custom features you have on your house, such as professional outdoor lighting, the higher the appraisal value is likely to be if you ever decide to list your home for resale. Curb appeal isn’t only about resale values, it is also about creating your own slice of paradise to come home to every evening. According to popular Country Living magazine, one of the top 15 ways to increase curb appeal includes the importance of a well-lit house front. Setting a welcoming tone with your home’s entry should be a clear path that’s well-lit and maintained makes visitors feel comfortable and welcomed. Symmetry and framing the entryway in romantic washes of light so to not overpower guests is also important.

“A well-lit home and yard is as much about safety and security as it is about aesthetics. Be sure to light the most frequently used areas around your home, such as the front porch, steps, driveway, walkways, back patio, and deck. To highlight specific landscaping, look for path lights to illuminate your walk or accent lights to spotlight a tree.”

A well-lit home and yard is as much about safety and security as it is about aesthetics.

Let us not forget, that August marks the end of summer. The arrival of fall, and soon thereafter, winter mean the days are shorter and darkness will descend earlier. Outdoor lighting is important when considering an upgrade that will provide added function and curb appeal for your home and landscape. For safety’s sake it is always best that walkways be well-lit. For aesthetics, landscape lighting can accentuate the positive attributes of the yard and provide enhanced visibility where and when you need it most. Making the decision to move ahead with the addition of outdoor lighting now, is a win/win for every reason and every season!

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives tree lighting

Our landscape lighting leaves nothing to the imagination but beauty.

The popularity of outdoor lighting continues to rise. To many, a home is just not complete without it. Outdoor lighting designs continue to provide more benefits and heightened beauty to residential homes, businesses and their surrounding grounds and landscapes. Gone are the days when a single floodlight over the garage or on the porch constituted a home’s entire outdoor lighting display. Homeowners, and business owners alike, realize the positive impact a professional outdoor lighting installation can have in the success and enjoyment of their site.

Among the most popular genre of outdoor lighting is landscape lighting. The popularity of landscape lighting continues to burn brighter and more creative than ever before. The origins of landscape lighting began with being a security and safety-driven way to illuminate the areas you frequent and to thwart would-be intruders. Today, in addition to the safety and security landscape lighting provides, enhancing the beauty of your home and landscape is also a driving force. Landscape lighting has turned into a major focal point to draw you out of your home in different ways. Lighting gives your home  that extra “pop” at night and, perhaps, even makes your neighbors a little jealous too.

St. Louis landscape lighting increases curb appeal and safety at your home all year.

Landscape lighting ideas are almost endless as their popularity increases as the top outdoor living trend for 2014! The American Society of Landscape Architects recently released the results of its 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey. Landscape architects who specialize in residential design across the country were asked to rate the expected popularity of a variety of residential outdoor design elements for the upcoming year. No shocker: The findings showed that people love outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting came in at #1 outdoor living feature for 2014! Across all categories, 98.3 % of respondents rated lighting as somewhat or very in-demand for 2014.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis feels the reasons in the rising popularity of outdoor lighting is two-fold. First, homeowners are realizing that anything that looks good during the daytime can look just as good, if not better, at night with the addition of outdoor lighting. Secondly, outdoor lighting continues to evolve being within the reach, and budget, of  homeowners. Homeowners are increasingly using low-voltage LED lights to accentuate their outdoors. LED’s consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, making it a perfect fit for most any household! LED use includes adding lights around swimming pools, pergolas, decks, patios or fire features. Illuminating outdoor fountains, statuary, fish ponds, seating areas and retaining walls is also popular.

Hot St. Louis summer

The heat can place a damper on outdoor living enjoyment during the hot, balmy daytime hours.

Summer is the season we all look forward to. The kids are out of school which allows us more freedom to take advantage of recreational opportunities. There are less time constraints, fewer obligations and less madness giving us more time to relax.  However, the heat that also comes along with summer can place a damper on your comfort level while trying to enjoy the season. This is especially the case when spending time outdoors during the day.
