LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights

LED lights are long lasting, energy efficient and among the safest lights on the market.

Over the last 12 years, we’ve designed and installed over 1,000 outdoor lighting systems. Some would say we’ve seen it all – all the trends in outdoor lighting. In reality, well designed outdoor lighting is just not trendy. You’re just not going to see new color bulbs or new ways to light a tree. Classic upscale lighting is classic upscale lighting. Clean soft white lighting illuminating facades and landscapse are timeless. If we’ve seen one change, it’s in the emergence of LED outdoor lighting here in St. Louis. At its debut, LED was an expensive bulb technology although none disagreed that it would probably pay off. LED outdoor bulbs can last up to 50,000 hours – or more! But, LED outdoor bulbs are significantly more expensive. On the one hand, they don’t need annual replacement but it’s still difficult to make an exact case, in dollars and cents, of the long-term financial savings of going with LED.

Let’s look at just a little of the math. Let’s say you run your outdoor lighting system for 8 hours/night. On a bulb that lasts 5,000 hours, you would get 6,250 days out of that one single bulb. There are a couple more factors to add to this cost savings equation. In addition to long lasting bulbs, the bulbs utilize about 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Calculate the savings of using 90% less energy over 6,250 days!

Take the cost savings one step further. In our calculation, we considered running your outdoor lights 8 hours/night. This is an important number. At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis, we utilize outdoor lighting control automation systems. The system is programmed to fit your needs. Let’s say you want your lights to come on at 8PM and stay on to deter intruders and illuminate your facade for 8 hours. This might mean you need to remember to turn your lights on and off. Lighting control automation is designed to take care of that for you. It’s truly a set-it-and-forget-it technology.

There are a couple additional benefits of outdoor lighting control.

We can program your outdoor lighting control to illuminate at different levels at different times of the night. For example, we can program it to come on at 50% at dusk, 100% for the next 3 hours, turn off during the night, and come back on for 2 hours at dawn as your family leaves for work and school. One of the keys to that equation is the ever-changing dusk and dawn times and how these change further with daylight savings time. Our “smart” system follows these changing times. Just like the time on your cell phone automatically changes for daylight savings, our smart system knows the changing dusk time, dawn time, and new time after daylight savings time.

So how can St. Louis LED outdoor lighting be even more affordable? Lighting Automation. You never have to worry about turning the lights off. They will only run when you want them to and you don’t need to lift a finger to make this happen.

Longer lasting bulbs, dramatic energy efficiency, programmed usage, big savings. These savings are both on your pocket and also the environment.

Less is always more when it comes to mosquitoes!

Outdoor living is not only a trend – it’s a lifestyle. St. Louis homeowners are adding outdoor fireplaces, decks, and patios to their backyards to really enjoy spending time and quality living in their own backyard. With the investment in these spaces, and enjoying the spaces, residents want to enjoy their yard from the day long into the night. As dusk falls, the true romance of outdoor living and summer memories comes to life with well designed outdoor lighting. But, with dusk comes mosquitoes. With mosquitoes come the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses. At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis, we have a sister company – Mosquito Squad of West St. Louis County. With the combination of outdoor lighting and insect protection, we can ensure you can really enjoy your outdoor space at night.

How does such a tiny insect cause so much trouble? Simple; mosquitoes, though tiny, are capable of giving us not only itchy bites but also of transmitting illness and disease. Among the most recent mosquito-borne illnesses that is causing quite a stir is the painful Chikungunya Virus. Here in St. Louis, health officials recently confirmed the first case of this virus to show up locally in the St. Louis area. Luckily, the infected resident was not bitten by a mosquito in St. Louis, but rather by a mosquito from the Caribbean.

The CDC confirms  the virus is transmitted to people by mosquitoes.  Symptoms include headaches, fever, joint pain and swelling.  The virus made its first appearance in the Americas in the Caribbean in 2013.  So far, there is no vaccine to prevent the disease or medicine to treat the infection. Since the first local transmission of Chikungunya was reported in the Americas late last year, health officials have been bracing for the arrival of the debilitating, mosquito-borne virus in the United States. Just seven months after the first cases were found in the Caribbean, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention( CDC) reported the first locally acquired case of Chikungunya in Florida.

Our landscape lighting leaves nothing to the imagination but beauty.

The popularity of outdoor lighting continues to rise. To many, a home is just not complete without it. Outdoor lighting designs continue to provide more benefits and heightened beauty to residential homes, businesses and their surrounding grounds and landscapes. Gone are the days when a single floodlight over the garage or on the porch constituted a home’s entire outdoor lighting display. Homeowners, and business owners alike, realize the positive impact a professional outdoor lighting installation can have in the success and enjoyment of their site.

Among the most popular genre of outdoor lighting is landscape lighting. The popularity of landscape lighting continues to burn brighter and more creative than ever before. The origins of landscape lighting began with being a security and safety-driven way to illuminate the areas you frequent and to thwart would-be intruders. Today, in addition to the safety and security landscape lighting provides, enhancing the beauty of your home and landscape is also a driving force. Landscape lighting has turned into a major focal point to draw you out of your home in different ways. Lighting gives your home  that extra “pop” at night and, perhaps, even makes your neighbors a little jealous too.

St. Louis landscape lighting increases curb appeal and safety at your home all year.

Landscape lighting ideas are almost endless as their popularity increases as the top outdoor living trend for 2014! The American Society of Landscape Architects recently released the results of its 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey. Landscape architects who specialize in residential design across the country were asked to rate the expected popularity of a variety of residential outdoor design elements for the upcoming year. No shocker: The findings showed that people love outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting came in at #1 outdoor living feature for 2014! Across all categories, 98.3 % of respondents rated lighting as somewhat or very in-demand for 2014.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis feels the reasons in the rising popularity of outdoor lighting is two-fold. First, homeowners are realizing that anything that looks good during the daytime can look just as good, if not better, at night with the addition of outdoor lighting. Secondly, outdoor lighting continues to evolve being within the reach, and budget, of  homeowners. Homeowners are increasingly using low-voltage LED lights to accentuate their outdoors. LED’s consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, making it a perfect fit for most any household! LED use includes adding lights around swimming pools, pergolas, decks, patios or fire features. Illuminating outdoor fountains, statuary, fish ponds, seating areas and retaining walls is also popular.

patio lighting

LED patio and deck outdoor lighting allows for endless conversation and no time constraints on good times.

May is National Barbecue Month and Memorial Day is just a few days away. With both these occasions on the calendar, the holiday promises to be a time for fun, food, friends and family. Chances are you plan to gather outdoors for your celebration and revel in the enjoyment long after the sun goes down, right? Being able to enjoy the benefits of LED outdoor lighting in your outdoor living space to enhance occasions such as this just became even better! LED outdoor lighting is among the most beneficial type of outdoor lighting you can invest in. LED lighting is more energy efficient and leaves less of an impact on the environment than other types of outdoor lighting.  It can save a homeowner thousands in energy costs over the LED’s lifetime. In addition, since they contain no glass components, they are not vulnerable to vibration or breakage like conventional bulbs and make the perfect lighting for outdoor applications. LED lights are free of toxic chemicals. Most conventional fluorescent bulbs contain a multitude of materials such as mercury that are dangerous for the environment and make disposal dangerous. Since they contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable, they will help you reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third. LED is safer in many regards too because it generates light from cool burning technology, and it uses less wire to install properly. But, wait the benefits of LED get even better…

St. Louis green LED outdoor lighting

As LED outdoor lighting technologies evolve, more benefits are being brought into the open about their use.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis is the business of premiere outdoor lighting design and install firm for all genres of outdoor lighting including LED. Our location, along with many other Outdoor Lighting Perspectives locations around the country, primarily use Cree LED outdoor lighting in our LED outdoor lighting installations. Researchers at Cree recently stumbled upon an added benefit of their already beneficial  LED product that can be added to the long list of reasons using LED in the landscape is a smart choice. Hence discovering insects (including those pesky mosquitoes) being less attracted to LED outdoor lighting to the already long list of good things about LED!

No more having to deal with the chore of cleaning deceased bugs from your outdoor lights with our LED's!

No more having to deal with the chore of cleaning deceased bugs from your outdoor lights with our LED’s!

In a story published on the Cree Revolution Blog, Gary Trott, a product development innovator for Cree LED Lighting speaks candidly speaks about how Cree LED’s can reduce the number of insects getting into your lighting fixtures, and also how using LED can reduce the amount of insects attracted to your illuminated outdoor living areas. When he set out to help develop this innovative LED, bug ingress prevention was NOT a design goal, but he quickly noticed a significant decrease in the number of insects present in a LR6 down light installed above the door he walks through every day. After being in place for four years, the light had almost zero bugs in it! This sparked his curiosity which led to research and findings from Marianne Shockley Cruz Ph.D. and Rebecca Lindner at the University Of Georgia Department Of Entomology. The paper that details the results of this groundbreaking research is titled “Insect Vision: Ultraviolet, Color, and LED Light.“

deck lighting makes the most of evening fun

Enjoy your deck this Memorial Day well into the evening with confidence.

Simply defined, the research indicates that since insects are attracted to UV light, and Cree LEDs emit little or no power in the UV spectrum, insects just aren’t interested and a  less interested bug means fewer bugs present where Cree LED’S are used, period. The article states, “Color sensitivity in the UV spectrum plays an important role in foraging, navigation, and mate selection in both flying and terrestrial invertebrate animals.  This attraction to UV light has made insects a useful model for understanding visual sensitivity to UV light. Cree LEDs emit little or no power in the UV spectrum.  Incandescent, fluorescent, and metal halide sources emit a substantial amount of UV radiation, thus it is likely that bugs are less attracted to fixtures utilizing Cree LEDs.”

Mosquitoes in St. Louis resting under leaf

Our LED outdoor lighting attracts less insects into your landscape, including the disease carrying mosquito!

This news comes as a breath of fresh air to St. Louis area homeowners where  mosquito-borne illness such as West Nile Virus is a growing concern during the outdoor living seasons. Any means of deterring insects into the landscape, especially mosquitoes, is a huge benefit to St. Louis homeowners. Imagine being able to spend time on your deck, patio or outdoor living space not hassled by bugs, or bitten by mosquitoes in the evening?  The discovery of this added benefit to using LED also cuts down on time and money spent to maintain your outdoor lighting installations. Reducing or even eliminating the unpleasant chore of  cleaning out dead bugs from light fixtures. If you’ve ever emptied a pile of dead flies and moths from a fixture, you know light fixtures of all types are notorious for attracting and collecting insects. Just imagine the time you can spend elsewhere enjoying the time saved not cleaning bugs out of light fixtures annually.

National Landscape Architecture MonthAs many of you may know, April is National Landscape Architecture Month. This event was founded by the American Society of Landscape ArchitectureLandscape architecture consists of designing outdoor public areas, landmarks, and structures to achieve environmental, social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes. Landscape architects also oversee, along with other specialized contractors, private estate and residential landscape  planning and designs as well. These can encompass visual resource management, green infrastructure planning, provision and a host of other professions.

During the month of April, landscape architects from all over the county come together to promote this year’s theme of “Career Discovery.” This is to educate and promote the landscape architecture profession to students, specifically underrepresented minorities. They will also hold public events showcasing  what can be done through hands-on work with the public, speaking engagements, and in-school presentations.

St. Louis landscape lighting and path lighting enhances this stunning estate.

Along with landscape architects specifically, outdoor lighting also plays a key role in the design of outdoor areas, public and private alike, with the common goal of creating an aesthetically pleasing area while paying close attention to environmental concerns. Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis we have worked closely with landscape architects to choose the right lighting for a specific installation. These can be commercial settings, or multi-family residential settings. A favorite among many of the landscape architects we have collaborated with is our LED outdoor lighting. Not only does LED please aesthetically in a myriad of applications, it is also a “greener” lighting source than traditional outdoor lighting. This is because LED uses up to 90% less energy and LED’s contain no dangerous mercury that can impact the environment. That’s just the tip of the iceberg too, as the benefits of LED outdoor lighting go on, and on.

Commercial Pathway

The success of this commercial landscape includes both landscape architecture and professional outdoor lighting.

We use our lighting to bring the vision of what a landscape architect sees for a specific area and create continuity in the final outcome that will extend day into evening. This may include the use of landscape lighting, path lighting, tree lighting, and even water feature lighting to aid in achieving the goal of the landscape architect.

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis , we admire the efforts and talent of our local landscape architects — with that in mind, Happy National Landscape Architecture Month!

LED Outdoor lighting is a beautiful reflection on your home.

Ar LED outdoor lighting is a beautiful reflection on your home.

Do you currently have a halogen or incandescent outdoor lighting system and wish you had an LED system? In many cases a conversion to LED is easier than you may think, and will save you a lot of money in the long run by choosing to convert to this greener and more sustainable technology.  Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of St. Louis is able to convert over 90% of our customers existing traditional systems to LED systems. If you are on the fence about choosing LED for your outdoor lighting, here is a list of reasons why LED is the clear choice…

  • St. Louis green LED outdoor lighting

Who knew these little bulbs could make such a big impact on the environment and your wallet?

Bulb Life– LED bulbs last 10 times longer than regular bulbs. Some LED bulbs can last as long as 50,000 hours!

  • Cool Burning– LED’s burn cooler than other bulbs. There is no heat build up in relation to operating an LED bulb. This reduces the risk of overheating, damage and even fire. Making LED safer to operate.
  • Durability– Since LED’s contain no filament, when other bulbs would break or shatter, LED’s will hold up to more vibration, bumping or other circumstances. They also burn more efficiently in colder surroundings than other bulbs.
  • Non Toxic– LED’s contain no dangerous mercury that can impact the environment.
  • Efficiency– LED’s use very little energy to operate which saves you on energy costs, and makes them a sustainable choice in outdoor lighting. Less energy on your end means less impact on the world around us.
  • Superb Light Quality– LED’s burn evenly and cohesive illuminating areas with just the right amount of light for security, safety and to promote ambiance. With a CRI ( color rendering index), rating from 80 to the mid 90′s, which means they exude a high-quality illumination on a CRI scale of 1-100 in terms of light quality.

Two years ago, we set out nationally to produce a line of LED products designed specifically for landscape lighting systems. Built from the ground up using U.S. made CREE brand LEDs, these top quality bulbs are the last landscape lighting bulb you will ever need. The best part is that even clients who have an existing halogen or incandescent system may easily be able to convert to LED. This means having an LED system is within reach without having the expenditure of starting over from scratch to take advantage of the benefits. In fact, upgrading to LED makes so much sense that it pays for itself within 2-4 years and then saves you even more over the next 15 years!
